Valenzuela’s Win Clinches Victory for Fullerton

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- Alexis Valenzuela's three-set victory over Cal Poly's Susanne Boyden at the top of the lineup clinched the match-winning point for Cal State Fullerton as the Titans defeated the Mustangs, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, Fullerton is now 16-2 overall and 4-2 in Big West Conference play. Cal Poly is 3-12 on the year and 1-4 against league competition.

For the 17th time this season, Fullerton started the match by taking a 1-0 lead in doubles play. Camille De Leon and Valenzuela (14-1) won their 11th straight at the top of the order, defeating Molly Reed and Seriana Saltzen, 6-1.

Sophomores Sarah Nuno and Karla Portalatin then clinched the point with a 6-3 victory over Abigail Bacharach and Boyden at No. 2 doubles as the pair won its 13th straight to improve to 16-1.

Junior Danielle Pham put Fullerton ahead 2-0 as she dispatched Bacharach, 6-0, 6-4, at the bottom of the order, improving her record to 12-4 this season.

The Titans took a 3-0 lead after sophomore Masako Makiba defeated Celine Gruaz, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5 in the lineup.

Cal Poly scored its first point when Louise Oxnevad scored a 6-2, 6-3 victory over De Leon at No. 2 singles, and the Mustangs closed 3-2 when Reed edged Nuno, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 4 in the order.

Saltzen tied the match with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Portalatin before Valenzuela's win clinched Fullerton's victory.


The Titans return to action on Saturday at CSUN with the start time set for 11 a.m.


Notes: Cal State Fullerton has not lost the doubles point this season…Fullerton's 16 victories are just one shy of tying last season's program record 17 wins.
