Titans Win in Extra Innings Over Texas


FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton softball team defeated the Texas Longhorns 3-2 Friday night in game one of their three game series. The Titans tied up the game in the bottom of the seventh inning to go into extra innings.

Pitcher Kelsey Kessler (10-4) earned another win by pitching all nine innings with only two runs on seven hits, and had eight strikeouts. Brooke Bolinger (4-2) from the Longhorns picked up the loss.

Action took place in the top of the fourth inning with Texas scoring the first two runs. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Shianne Brannan immediately hit her first home run of the season to bring the score up 2-1.

To tie the game in the seventh inning, Ariana Williams got on base with a walk, then stole second and advanced to third on an error from the Longhorns catcher. Delynn Rippy reached on base with a fielder's choice, and stole second base as well. Samantha Vandiver got on base next with a walk, then with the bases loaded, Lexi Gonzalez walked to advance Ariana Williams home.

The Titans went into extra innings with the Longhorns, then finally in the bottom of the ninth inning, Lexi Gonzalez reached first on an error from the Texas shortstop, only to bring in Delynn Rippy for the final run and 3-2 win for the Titans.

The Titans will continue the series against the Texas Longhorns on Saturday, March 18, at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the Anderson Family Field.
