TUCSON, Ariz. – Cal State Fullerton women's soccer fell 2-1 to the Arizona Wildcats in Tucson on Friday night. Arizona scored two goals in quick succession early in the second frame to pull away from the Titans. CSF finished the game strong but was unable to tie the match and send it into extra time.
"Obviously, the result is not what we wanted here but I am very encouraged by the last 15 minutes of tonight's match," head coach Demian Brown said. "I thought that was a very good indication of what our women can do. Now, the effort is to get us to play a 90 minute match in that fashion against quality competition."
Arizona (7-1) controlled the game throughout the first half and most of the second half as the Titans (3-4-1) recorded just one shot in the first 45 minutes. Despite being under nearly constant pressure, the squad defended well and kept the Wildcats at bay.
But, the seal was broken early in the second half as Arizona scored in the 55th and 56th minutes, respectively, to take a 2-0 lead that Fullerton could not recover from. Jill Aguilera and Jada Talley were the goal scorers for the Wildcats.
Fullerton pulled one back in the 69th minute to cut the lead to 2-1. Maddie Bennett played a square ball to Haley Brown in the center of the 18-yard box who took a shot. Arizona goalkeeper Lainey Burdett parried the shot right to the feet of Samantha McKenna who tapped the ball in for her first goal of the season and the fourth of her career. Brown gets credit for the assist on that play, the first of her career.
Goalkeeper Tianna Sanders made some remarkable stops for the Titans as she tallied six saves. But she was under pressure often as the Wildcats ripped 21 total shots and won eight corner kicks. Fullerton totaled five shots and won three corner kicks.
The Titans continue their road swing on Sunday at Grand Canyon with kickoff set for 1 p.m. PT.
