FULLERTON, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton (14-15, 6-10 Big West) suffered a tough 63-70 loss on Saturday afternoon against UC Riverside as the team celebrated Senior Night.
Five Titans reached double-figures led by Jade Vega, who put up 15 points in her final game in Titan Gym. Amiee Book was right behind her with 14 points on 5-7 shooting (4-6 from three). Daeja Smith recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Raina Perez had 11 points and a team-high four assists. Carolyn Gill also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Hannah Thompson was the only other Titan to score as the senior had 5 points.
Fullerton took control early as six first quarter points from Vega led them to a commanding 23-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Titan defense held UCR to less than 30% shooting from the field en route to the early lead.
The teams matched each other shot for shot in the second quarter, each shooting just shy of 50% from the field. The Titans remained in control at the break with a nine-point lead.
Unfortunately, UCR would come out of the break and dominate the rest of the way. While the Fullerton offense was held to less than 35% shooting, the Riverside offense was well above 40% as the Highlanders outscored the Titans 45-28 in the second half.
Despite the outcome, Cal State Fullerton will be in the Big West Tournament for the first time since the 2014-15 season. They will face rival Long Beach Tuesday night at UC Irvine with tip-off at 8:30 p.m.
