Breaking Down the Sun Devils

Arizona State enters the week receiving votes in both the AP and USA Today Poll. The Sun Devils are under head coach Charlie Turner Thorne. Thorne, currently in her 17th season at Arizona State recently eclipsed the 350 overall win mark this season as a head coach.

Arizona State enters the 2013-14 season looking to build off a 2012-13 campaign that saw the Sun Devils finish with a 13-18 record (5-13 Pac-12 Conference). Arizona State is off to an impressive  8-1 start. The Sun Devils are averaging 78.9 points per game this season while they surrender an average of 63.3 points per game. Arizona State defeated No. 15 North Carolina 94-81 earlier this season in overtime.

Arizona State is led by redshirt senior guard Deja Mann, who is averaging a team-high 13.4 points and 2.0 steals per game. Senior guard Adrianne Thomas is averaging 10.7 points per game this season, which is second best on the team. Freshman forward Sophie Brunner adds  8.4 ppg and 6.2 rpg. The Sun Devils are shooting 47 percent from the field this season and 36 percent from outside the arc.

Conference Call

The Titans are 56-74 (.430) all-time against Pac-12 Conference foes. The last time the Titans faced a team from the Pac-12, Fullerton was upended by the Oregon State Beavers 54-36 on Dec.13, 2012 in Corvallis, Ore., last season. The Titans have lost 21 of 2 straight contests against the Pac-12 with their last victory (61-55) coming against USC 61-55 on Dec. 21, 1990.

Last Time Out for the Titans

After trailing by only two at the half, a second half surge by the 20th ranked Iowa State Cyclones was too much for Cal State Fullerton to handle as the Cyclones defeated the Titans, 79-52, at Hilton Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.

Cal State Fullerton (1-7) was led by redshirt sophomore guard Hailey King, who scored 13 points, while grabbing six rebounds. Senior Alex Thomas connected on three three-pointers to finish with 11 points and junior guard Chante Miles scored 10 points and added a team-high six assists in the loss.

Iowa State (8-0) was led by senior Hallie Christofferson, who scored a career-high 33 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Nicole Blaskowsky also finished with 16 points and Seanna Johnson added seven points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

Iowa State jumped out to an early 8-0 advantage, but the Titans went on a 6-0 run over the next four minutes to bring the Cyclones lead down to two. Fullerton would get within one, but a 10-3 run by Iowa State extended the lead back to 19-11 with 5:48 remaining in the first half.

However, the Titans would keep pace with the Cyclones as Chante Miles knocked down a three-pointer with five seconds left in the half to head into intermission down 27-25. Fullerton took a season high 23 three-pointers in the half, while connecting on six shots (6-for-23) from behind the arc.

The Cyclones and Titans came out of the half trading baskets for the first four minutes, but a 10-2 Iowa State run quickly put the Cyclones up by 12. Over the next few minutes Iowa State's lead grew to as many as 17, but Thomas and freshman Samantha Logan knocked down back-to-back three pointers to propel a 10-0 Titan run, which cut the Iowa State lead down to 7 with seven minutes left to play. The Titans would come no closer though as a 21-1 run to end the game sealed the victory for the Cyclones.

Fullerton shot 30 percent from the field for the game, while shooting 28 percent (11-for-40) on a new program high 40 three-point attempts.

Iowa State shot 64 percent in the second half, to overcome a slow start in the opening period. The Cyclones outscored the Titans 30-12 in the paint and forced 15 Fullerton turnovers.

Autograph Night

The Titans invite all fans after the Arizona State game on Saturday to come join the team for autographs in the gym.

Where We Rank

Through eight games here's a look at where the Titans stack up early on. Fullerton ranks  second in the Big West Conference in scoring defense (66.4 ppg), third in defensive rebounding (38.4 rpg), third in defensive rebounding percentage (.676), and fourth in three-pointers made per game (6.13).

What's Trending

The Titans bench has outscored the opponent's bench in four contests this season...Fullerton has committed more turnovers than the opposition in six of eight games to open the season...the Titans used their fifth different starting lineup this season last weekend.

Thomas Connecting From Behind the Arc

Senior guard Alex Thomas knocked down three three-pointers last weekend at Iowa State giving her a new career high for three-pointers in a game. The Mission Viejo, Calif., native previously connected on two three-pointers ten different times in her career.

A Streak Meant For Snapping

The Titans come into this one looking for their first home win of the season, after beginning the year 0-3 at home. Fullerton has lost four straight home contests going back to last season.

Career Milestones Approaching

Senior Alex Thomas and junior Chante Miles each need one steal to reach 100 career steals. Miles has recorded 10 steals through eight games while Thomas has four steals. Hailey King needs 11 points for 100 career points and senior Brianna Barfield needs seven points for 200 total points in her career.

The Second Half, Times Two

Fullerton has scored 54.6 percent (245/449) of its total points this season in the second half. If one were to replace Fullerton's first half scoring with its second half scoring this season, the Titans would be averaging 61.2 points per game compared to its current 56.1 points per game clip. Fullerton is knocking more shots down in the second half, while also having less turnovers.

Flying Under the Radar

Slowly but surely, Samantha Logan is making her presence felt. She currently leads the team in overall rebounding (6.3 rpg) and defensive rebounding (4.3 rpg). Her overall rebounding per game ranks 10th best in the Big West, while her defensive rebounding ranks tied for eighth. She's averaged 9.0 rebounds per game over her last five appearances.

Good to Be Back Home

After playing five of its first eight games on the road to start the year, Fullerton now begins what will be a season-long three game homestand: Arizona State (Dec. 14), Seattle (Dec. 21), and New Mexico State (Dec. 23).

Finding the Right Mix

Cal State Fullerton has used five different starting lineups this season. Hailey King and Alex Thomas are the only Titans to have started in every game this season.

Miles Dishing Out Assists

After eight games, junior guard Chante Miles is second in the Big West in assists. The Compton, Calif., native has 38 assists this season and set a new career high against Alabama after dishing out eight assists. Miles previous high was seven assists, which she recorded versus Hawai'i on Jan. 3, 2013.

Individuals in the Big West

After eight games multiple Titans individually rank at the top of statistical categories for the Big West Conference. Junior Chante Miles is 11th in scoring (14.3 ppg), second in assists (4.8 apg), first in minutes played (35.9 mpg), and seventh in assists-to-turnovers ratio (1.19). Kathleen Iwuoha is ranked second in field goal percentage (.523) and 10th in offensive rebounds (2.43 pg). Forward Natalie Williams is sixth in blocked shots per game (1.13 bpg). Samantha Logan is ranked third in three-point field goal percentage (.441) and fifth in three-pointers made (1.88 pg), and 10th in rebounding (10th, 6.3 rpg).

Bench Production

The Titans' bench has produced 118 of Fullerton's 449 total points scored this season (26 percent)...the CSUF bench has been outscored by opposition's bench 118-135 this season...Cal State Fullerton's leading scorer, Chante Miles, has come off the bench one time this season.

Fullerton's Dynamic Duo

Chante Miles and Kathleen Iwuoha have combined to score 184 of Fullerton's 449 points this season (41%).

Samantha Logan recorded her first career double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds) on Nov. 29 versus Toledo and was the first Titan since Kathleen Iwuoha had 15 points and 13 rebounds against Pacific on March 15, 2013 to earn a double-double. However, the Corona, Calif., native came back the next day to record another double-double versus Alabama (19 points, 11 rebounds). Also, Logan was just one point shy of posting a double-double against Columbia on Nov. 22 (9 points, 10 rebounds). Fullerton had four double-doubles during the 2012-13 season.

Milestones Reached

After the 80-54 win versus Columbia (Nov. 22), senior Alex Thomas passed the 600 career total point mark in her career and junior Chante Miles passed the 500 career point milestone. Junior Kathleen Iwuoha recorded her 400th career point in a 59-58 loss to Toledo on Nov. 29.

Scoring Threat

Chante Miles has averaged 14.3 points per game, which leads all Titan players. Miles set a new career high after scoring 21 points against Columbia on Nov. 22. The Compton, Calif., native has had double-digit scoring figures in all eight games this season and has 28 total in her career. Last season the junior guard had 19 double-digit scoring games and one 20-point game.

Balanced Scoring

Fullerton had four players score in double figures at Columbia on Nov. 22, the first time that the Titans had more than two players score 10 or more points. Junior Chante Miles upped her career best to 21 points to lead all players. Redshirt sophomore Hailey King had a career high 15 points, while junior Kathleen Iwuoha added 15 points and senior Alex Thomas scored 12. The Titans have had at least one player reach double figure scoring in each game this season.

Versus the Top 25

Iowa State was the first nationally ranked opponent for the Cal State Fullerton women's basketball program since the Titans played Gonzaga on Dec. 2, 2011 when the 24th ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs defeated Fullerton 73-60 at Titan Gym. Last season the Titans played three teams (Georgetown, Gonzaga, Pacific) that received votes in either the AP or USA Today Coaches Poll. Fullerton has lost its last 14 consecutive games against teams either ranked or receiving votes in either poll dating back to a 68-65 win over Idaho (receiving votes in the Associated Press poll) on Jan. 24, 2004, in Moscow, Idaho... the Titans have lost their last 25 meetings with top 25 foes since posting a 75-63 victory over No. 24 (Associated Press) Long Beach State on Jan. 21, 1991... Overall, Fullerton is 11-95 against nationally ranked competition dating to the 1977 season... the Titans have not been listed among the top 25 since Feb. 4, 1991, breaking into the Associated Press poll at No. 24 that week.
