NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – With a goal early in the first period and suffocating defense throughout the match, Cal State Fullerton took down division rivals CSUN 1-0 Wednesday night at Performance Soccer Field.
Senior Diego Sanchez scored an unbelievable goal in the 14th minute to give the Titans an 1-0 lead. Mark Hernandez delivered a perfect cross from the left side of the field to Sanchez just inside the 18-yard box who one-timed the ball out of the air to the nearside post for his second goal of the season.
Fullerton's defense stifled the Matadors the rest of the match, giving up just six shots throughout 90 minutes. The Titans once again outshot their opponents, getting off nine shots in the fixture. Both teams had equal opportunities on corner kicks, earning three each.
Paul-Andre Guerin played a stellar game in net for the Titans, recording four saves on the night to earn Fullerton its seventh shutout match of the season. With the win, Guerin is now 6-5-2 when starting in goal.
With its first win over CSUN since Oct. 2015, Fullerton moves into a tie for first place with the Matadors in the Big West Conference South division with a record of 4-3-2 to total 14 points.
The Titans continue their hunt for the no. 1 seed in the South Division as they host UC Irvine Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Titan Stadium on Senior night. Seniors Nicolo D'Amato, Corentin Ohlmann and Diego Sanchez will be honored prior to the match.
