CLEMSON, S.C. – Cal State Fullerton men's soccer (0-1-0) battled until the bitter end but ultimately could not overcome No. 5 Clemson (1-0-0) as they dropped the season opener 2-0 Friday afternoon at Riggs Stadium in Clemson.
The Titans matched up with the Tigers in nearly every statistical category, finishing the match with the same number of shots, 13, and corners, 5.
Fullerton did however fall short in the most critical categories. The Titans put three of their 13 shots on goal while Clemson ended the match with four shots on goal. Goalkeeper Paul-Andre Guerin totaled two saves on the day while Ximo Miralles of Clemson tallied three.
The Tigers struck first as Jason Wright netted the first goal of the game in the 18th minute on an assist from Malick Mbaye. The midfielder wasn't done after the assist as he later scored on a penalty kick in the 60th minute following Daniel Adoo's takedown inside the box.
Newcomers Bass Sarr, Juarez and Adoo all tallied two shots apiece in the fixture.
The Titans now look to put the loss behind them as they head to Wofford College to take on the Terriers Sunday morning at 8 a.m. PT.
