HONOLULU, Hi. – Junior guard Kyle Allman, Jr. scored a career-high 40 points to lead Cal State Fullerton men's basketball to a comeback win at first-place Hawai'i on Saturday night. The Titans were down by 11 with 13:30 left in the game but rallied to earn a 69-66 win. With Allman's team-high four assists, he had a hand in 49 of the team's 69 points.
Hawai'i (13-6, 4-2) led Cal State Fullerton (12-8, 5-3) for just under 31 minutes of the game, including a halftime lead of 41-35. Michael Thomas scored 18 points in the first 10 minutes of the game for the Rainbow Warriors but CSF continued to hang around thanks to Allman's consistency throughout the game and the team's hot shooting.
CSF trailed by 11 with 13:30 left, then ended the game on a 30-16 run, forcing misses on each of Hawai'i's last five shots to secure the victory. CSF shot a season-high 61 percent (27-44) from the field and 53 percent (8-15) from beyond the arc.
Allman's 40-point outbreak was the fifth-best scoring performance in school history. He made a career-high 16 field goals on just 19 shot attempts and was one point shy of the Stan Sheriff Center single-game scoring record. He is also the first Titan to score more than 40 points since Tre' Coggins on Jan. 9, 2016 (vs. CSUN) and only the fifth Titan to ever do it.
Sophomore forward Jackson Rowe was the only other Titan in double figures with 14 points on 6-10 shooting. He also grabbed six rebounds, blocked a shot and had a steal. Sophomore guard Austen Awosika tallied seven points, including two free throws in the final seconds to give CSF a three-point lead. He also snatched four rebounds, dished out an assist and had two steals.
Thomas was the Rainbow Warriors' leading scorer with 16 points and six rebounds. Gibson Johnson scored 10 points and Jack Purchase scored 11 as the only other two Rainbow Warriors in double figures. Drew Buggs had seven points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals.
CSF returns to action on Saturday, looking for the season sweep when it hosts UC Irvine at 7 p.m. PT on ESPNU.
