Titans Welborn, Williams Earn Big West Honors

Cal Poly's Luke Llamas and UC Santa Barbara's Stephanie Rothstein grabbed the Big West Male and Female Track Athlete of the Week honors, while Co-Big West Field Athlete of the Week awards were handed out on both the men's and women's side. The men's honor is split between Cal State Fullerton's Aaron Williams and 49er Ronald Carter, while the women's side is shared by Cal State Northridge's Jere' Summers and Fullerton's Lacey Welborn. This is the first honor of the season for all six athletes.

Llamas grabbed the second place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 8:45.34, earning him a USATF Championships `B' standard. The senior from Canyon Country, Calif., ranks No. 4 all-time at Cal Poly.

With her 10th place finish in the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational, Gaucho Stephanie Rothstein set a new Big West conference record with a time of 33:27.85. Her mark, not only set a school record for UC Santa Barbara, but qualified her for the NCAA Championships and the USATF. The native of Phoenix, Ariz., currently ranks 10th in NCAA competition for the 2006 season. This is the first weekly honor for the UCSB women's team.

In the men's field events, both athletes nabbed the first prize in their respective event. Williams won the long jump at the Cal/Nevada Championships with a mark of 24-11. His distance leads the Big West and ranks him eighth nationally. Carter took the top spot at the Stanford Invitational with a NCAA Regional qualifying distance of 51-5.75 in the triple jump. The Los Angeles, Calif., native is second in the nation and is ranked seventh all-time at LBSU.

Welborn also excelled in the triple jump, posting a mark of 40-6.25 at the Cal/Nevada Championships. The senior Titan recorded the conference's leading mark, while also qualifying for the NCAA Regional. Throwing a personal-best distance of 50-2.75, Summers won the top spot in the shot put at the Cal/Nevada Championships. She also competed in the discus event where she claimed fourth place with a mark of 155-10.
