FULLERTON, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton Athletics and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) are participating in the the 12th annual Coin Drive this February.
The Coin Drive is a group effort as each school's SAAC collects coins during the month of February to donate to a charity of its choice. Cal State Fullerton has selected Team Impact, a national nonprofit that connects children facing serious and chronic illnesses with college athletic teams. For the fifth year in a row, institutions will donate 100 percent of the funds raised to their designated charities. The top three fundraising SAACs will receive a cash prize to put towards their SAAC budget.
Team Impact is a National Non-Profit Organization that partners with children ages 5-16 who have a chronic or serious condition like Cancer. These children team up with Team Impact in order to find a support group for them. Team Impact encourages the children to give them confidence, someone who can try and understand what they are going through and encourage them to keep going, and give them a sense of belonging. Kids are constantly in and out of the hospital for procedures whether it be chemo, surgeries, or just a check up. They are sometimes out of school for weeks so they lose the sense of belonging to a group of friends! The partnership with Collegiate Athletics gives them a group that will continue to be by their sides and help them through whatever they face.
Currently the Titans are partnered with Joshua and Aimee. Joshua has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He is 5 years old and joined Titans Baseball officially on November 16th, 2018. He is currently in what is called the maintenance stage of his cancer. Aimee has Type 1 Diabetes. She is 12 years old and joined Titans Softball during the 2018 season.
The men's soccer program and track and field program are going to be partnered with students in the very near future as well.
"The commitment the Big West Student Athlete Advisory Committee has demonstrated to charitable works over the years truly has been inspiring," said Big West Conference Commissioner Dennis Farrell. "The Coin Drive is a symbol of their dedication and we look forward to the continued growth of the event."
Last year, the Big West raised $14,215.37. Collectively, the Big West Coin Drive has raised $211,016.99 over its 11 years.
