Titans Battle, But Fall in Three To Long Beach

Fullerton, Calif. - Ali Daley had 13 kills and 18 digs to lead Long Beach State past Cal State Fullerton 3-0 (30-21, 30-25, 30-21) in a Big West Conference Volleyball match at Titan Gym Saturday night, in front of a season-high 402 fans.
Long Beach State, who improves to 21-5 on the season and 9-2 in the Big West, led in most major statistical categories except blocking, where they were out-blocked 7 to 4. Fullerton's Amanda Pfielschiefter stuffed six Long Beach attacks to lead all players in the losing effort. Fullerton falls to a game below .500 at 13-14 on the year and drop to 4-9 in league.
In contrast to their first meeting with the 49ers this season, the Titans managed to stay in all three games, and competed until the very end. Thanks to superb defense by the 49ers, the Titan hitting numbers were down significantly, as they were out-hit .273 to .173. Daly and Heather Laudato kept the Titan kill numbers to a minimum as they both dug 18 kill attempts apiece. Brittany Moore, coming off a career-high, 19-kill night last night, was held to just 10 on Saturday, leading the Fullerton offense. Moore hit just .161 on the night with allot of attempts coming her way.
Senior Alyssa Opeka picked up four block assists, moving her into a tie for the all-time block assist record with former Titan Stephanie Scofield. With her next block assist, Opeka will move into sole possession of the No. 1 spot, breaking the record held by Scofield since 1991.
Jenna Carney and Julie Geissert split time as the Titan setter with Carney picking up 19 assists, leading Geissert by 6 on the night. Long Beach also split time with their setters, with Nicole Vargas doing most the work collecting 29 to lead all players. Dyanne Lawlor added 14 assists as well.
Vanessa Vella and Danielle Hitzman collected 13 and 10 digs respectively for Fullerton, with Vella continuing to add to her Cal State Fullerton single-season record of 554.
The Titans return to the floor for their Big west Conference season finale on Thursday Nov. 17, as they will host UC Riverside at Titan Gym. Game Time is set for 7 p.m. The Titans will then conclude their season the following Tuesday with a game againts San Diego. Senior Night festivities will take place prior to the match to honor Amy Dixon, Alyssa Opeka and Sarah Morrison in their final games in a Titan uniform.
