Fullerton, Calif. - Thirteen kills and 5 blocks from Michelle Osunbor led Long Beach State to a 3-1 Big West Conference win over Cal State Fullerton, snapping the Titans' six-match winning streak and handing them their first loss of the season at home (11-1).
The 25-17, 23-25, 18-25, 17-25 loss was the first for Cal State Fullerton since Sept. 25, when the same 49ers snapped their school record seven match winning streak. The Titans drop to 17-5 overall and 6-2 in the Big West Conference, and also fall to the 49ers for the 57th straight time. Long Beach improves to 16-5 overall and moves into a tie with Fullerton at 6-2 in league play.
The Titans roared to a set 1 victory behind nine combined kills from Torrie Brown and Leah Maurer to engage the record 848 fans in Titan Gym, and even held four point lead at 21-17 in set No. 2 before Long Beach stormed back. Long Beach scored 8 of the last 10 points in set 2 to even the match up at 1-1. With exceptions at 1-1 in set No. 3, and 2-1 and 3-3 in set No. 4, the 49ers led the rest of the match after the break.
The Titans hit .145 as a team from the field, committing 26 errors in 171 swings. Brown led all players with 14 kills on the night, while Maurer finished with 13 and Erin Saddler with 10 kills each. Saddler also posted 11 digs for her 6thdouble-double of the season.
Osunbor paced the 49ers in the kill department. She and Haliegh Hampton (10 kills) and Janisa Johnson (12 kills) helped the 49ers to a .189 team attack percentage. The Titans did stop Long Beach standout Caitlin Ledoux. The hitter had just 8 kills and hit -.029 on the night.
Long Beach out-blocked Fullerton 14.0 to 10.0 with Hampton collecting a match high 8 blocks. Kayla Neto had 5 blocks to lead the way for Fullerton. Maurer also added 4.
Fullerton's Cami Croteau led all players with 34 digs defensively. But Long Beach countered with five players in double digit digs led by Lauren Minkle with 20. Fullerton's Andrea Ragan collected 11 digs along with 39 assists.
The Big West's reigning player of the week Ashley Lee had a double-double with 42 assists and 12 digs in the victory.
The Titans return to the court on Oct. 29 and 30 as they host UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly in Titan Gym. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
