Fullerton, Calif. - Three kills by Kayla Varney in the deciding set led the way for the Aggies in a 3-2 win by visiting UC Davis over Cal State Fullerton Saturday night in a Big West Conference match at Titan Gym.
Fullerton's loss snapped a five match winning streak and was the first five-set loss of the year. The Titans dropped to 11-11 on the year and 4-3 in conference play. UC Davis, won its second league affair in a row and improved to 10-11, 2-6.
Fullerton had not lost a match after leading 2-1 since 2005, but the Aggies pulled off the 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 23-25, 9-15 victory with the help of eight kills by Varney, and 19 Fullerton errors over the final two sets.
Varney and Katie Denny led the Aggies with 13 kills on the night, while Renee Ibekwe added 10 of her own in the win.
The five-set match also produce a lot on the defensive end. Cami Croteau set a career high and tied the second best dig performance ever by a Titan with 35 scoops. Croteau matched Vanessa Vella, who tallied 35 twice in her three-year career, and missed the single match record by just two digs. Croteau was one of four Titans with 12-or-more digs on the night. UC Davis had five players in double figures, led by Varney and Avreeta Singh with 22.
Freshman Andrea Ragan set a career high with 51 assists on the night, also matching the Titans' season high by an individual.
Davis out-blocked Fullerton 11.0 to 9.0 in the blocking department and was paced by Ibekwe and Julie King who each blocked five on the night. Sydney McDowell (4) and Alex Wolnisty (3) led the way at the net for Fullerton.
The Titans return to action next weekend up north. They will take on UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly on Oct. 24 and 24, with both matches beginning at 7 p.m.
