Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State's Caitlin Ledoux and Haleigh Hampton picked up 9 kills apiece as the 23rd-ranked 49ers beat Cal State Fullerton 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-18) at the Walter Pyramid, ending the Titans' winning streak at 7 matches.
The Titans dropped to 11-4 overall and begin the 2010 Big West Conference schedule 0-1 after dropping their 56th straight match to the 49ers. Long Beach improves to 11-3, 1-0.
Long Beach also snapped Fullerton's 21-set winning streak in the first set of Saturday's match by doubling up on the Titans in the kill department (16-8) and out-blocking them 6-2.
Work at the net was key for the 49ers. Michelle Osunbor and Hampton each had seven block assists and Janisa Johnson added six to a defense at the net that thwarted any attempt the Titans made to get their offense going. Long Beach ultimately out-blocked Fullerton 15.0 to 6.0.
The Titans had just 31 kills and made a 24 attack errors, leading to a .069 overall attack percentage. The Titans' leading attack percentage, Kayla Neto, hit .000 on the night with five kills and five errors in 16 swings. Long Beach hit .333 as a team.
Ayana Whitaker had the best night of any Titan, posting 4 kills, a .444 average and 5 blocks (2 solos).
Long Beach' s Lauren Minkle had 14 digs to pace the floor. No other player reached double digits.
The Titans return to action on Oct. 1 and 2 as they take on Cal Poly and Uc Santa Barbara, respectively, on the Central Coast. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.
