San Diego, Calif. - Erin Saddler blasted a career-high 19 kills and hit .457 as Cal State Fullerton swept Texas A&M, 3-0, snapping a six match losing streak in match four of the USD Volleyball Tournament at the Jenny Craig Pavilion Saturday afternoon.
The Titans hit a season-high .316 in snapping their longest losing streak in three years and improved to 3-6 on the year. The Aggies fell to 5-4.
Rallying behind eight set one kills by Saddler, the Titans won their first set in their last thirteen trys to take a 1-0 lead. Fullerton led by as many as four points early at 7-3 after a Saddler kill, but the Aggie would fight back and stay even or within three up through 22-19. A service ace by Cami Croteau, and kills by Genie Francisco and Saddler finished off the Aggies in the frist set, 25-22.
A combination of Texas A&M attack Errors and Titan kills allowed Fullerton to go on a 5-0 run early in set two to forge ahead at 5-2. They extended to a five point margin behind another Croteau ace and a pair of kills by Jennifer Edmond at 10-5. A&M's Kelsey Bryant posted a pair of kills and a service ace by Jennifer Banse highlighted a 4-0 run by the Aggies to almost even the set a 10-9. Despite A&M keeping it close, Fullerton did not relinquish the lead and put set two to rest with Sydney McDowell's second kill of the frame to win 25-19.
Cal State Fullerton trialed in set three by as many as four at 12-8, but came back and tied the seet at 13-13 and took over the lead at 15-14 with a Brittany Moore kill. The set stayed tied or withing one point through 22-all before Fullerton broke through wit the last three points, two courtesy of a pair of Saddler kills for the win. The Titans won by a margin of 25-22.
Saddler, whose previous kill high was 14 set last year as a freshman, also set the Titans' season high in the win.
Jennifer Edmon added nine kills and hit .438 behind Saddler. Sydney McDowell and Genie Francisco provided three block assists apiece as the Titans and Aggies tied 5.0 to 5.0 in the blocking department.
Sarah Ammerman (10 kills) was the only Aggie with double digit in kills. Kelsey Bryant had four blocks to lead all players.
Fullerton will meet Southern Miss at 5 p.m. to conclude tournament play.
