San Diego, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton's woes contiuned Friday night as they lost in three sets to No. 20 San Diego, 25-19, 25-13, 25-12, in the second match of the USD Tournament at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Titans have lost 12 straight sets, and 18 of their last 19 dating back to Aug. 30.
Fullerton drops to 2-6 on the year while San Diego improves to 6-1.
In set one, the Titans kept things close in the early going, but with the score knotted up at 7-7, a Torey Ellik kill ignighted a 6-3 run for USD. The Titans didn't let the Toreros gain much ground, pulling back within three at 22-19, but San Diego closed out set one with a 3-0 run.
After the Titans tied set two at 4-4, the Toreros scored eight times in 11 rallies to extend to a 12-7 lead, and from there never looked backFrom there, San Diego never looked back.
San Diego continued their control of the match, scoring 12 of the last 16 points in the match to put the Titans away.
The Toreros were led offensively by Amy DeGroot who notched 10 kills in 24 swings with just two errors to lead all players offensively.
Freshman Jennifer Edmond led the Titans with 8 kills and hit .235. Fullerton overall hit just .102 on the match while San Diego countered with an attack percentage of .296.
Defensively, the Titans' libero Cami Croteau scooped 14 digs to pace the court, while DeGroot's six blocks (3 solos, 3 assists) helped San Diego lead Fullerton 9.0 to 3.0 at the net.
A stretch of three straight matches against Top 20 teams comes to an end for Cal State Fullerton and they will now look to snap their skid in day two of the USD Volleyball Tournament against Texas A&M and Southern Miss. The first serve for each mach is set for noon and 5 p.m., respectively.
