Fullerton, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton looked a little star-struck in set one of Wednesday night's non-conference volleyball match as they hosted No. 5 UCLA at Titan Gym. Behind 12 kills and a .440 hitting percentage by Dicey McGraw, the Bruins swept the Titans 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-19), but the Titans made it a respectable match with their play in sets two and three.
UCLA (6-1) came in to Titan Gym and hit .421 in set number one to start the rare meeting between the two teams. The Titans and Bruins have not met since 2002, and only 14 times total in their histories. Prior to that, 1984 was the last time they had faced each other.
The Bruins jumped out to a 6-0 lead With Juliane Piggott serving after the initial sideout. Fullerton (2-5) had nine attack errors to only seven kills in the first frame, putting them in the red to start things out.
It looked as if the Bruins would continue to run the board as they started off set two leading 9-3. Fullerton then rallied to catch UCLA at 12-all and took a brief lead at 14-13. They hung with the Bruins until 19-20 when the visitors pulled away.
Set three remained tight through 20-17 (Bruins) but UCLA out-scored Fullerton 5-2 over the final seven exchanges to secure the victory.
Erin Saddler led the Titans with 10 kills on the night.
UCLA owned the net, outblocking Fullerton 8.0 to 0.0. Amanda Gil led all players with a share of six blocks.
Fullerton, losers of 14 of their last 15 sets, now head to San Diego for this weekend's USD Tournament at the Jenny Craig Pavilion where they will face No. 20 San Diego, Southern Miss and Texas A&M on Friday and Saturday.
