Portland, Ore. - Portland State's Jessica Vanzant had a game-high 21 kills as the Vikings of Portland State (6-2) handed the Cal State Fullerton Titans (5-3) their first loss of the Crown Plaza Volleyball Showcase 3-1 at Stott Center Saturday afternoon.
The Titans jumped out on top with a 30-28 victory in game one, but dropped the next three 27-30, 20-30, and 21-30, only managing to hit over .300 in game three (.314). Portland States attack ranged from .304 to .410 committing just 17 errors in the match.
Four Vikings connected for double-digits in kills, while the Titans had three collect at least 14. Senior Sara Morrison had a team-high 15 on the match with Alyssa Opeka and Danielle Hitzeman both tallied 14 apiece. Both Opeka and Morrison hit .323 while Amanda Pfielschiefter hit .353 with eight kills.
The Titans' jump-serving Julie Geissert led all players with five service aces, but it didn't match up as the Vikings out-aced the Titans 12-6. Geissert also had a season-high 53 assists, only to be outdone by the Vikings' setter Stephanie Lavigne who set 60.
On defense, the Titans did out-dig the Vikings 63-52, but were out-blocked 7-6. Three Fullerton players collected 13-or-more digs with freshman Allison de la Puente leading the way with 16. Pfielschifter led the Titans with four blocks, with Portland State's Kaylene Munson matching her, including one solo.
The Titans will take on Oregon tonight at 5:00 p.m. to wrap up their road trip in Oregon before heading home on Sunday.
