Titans Three-Game Winning Streak Snapped with 3-1 Loss to San Diego State

Sept. 7, 2005

Box Score

Fullerton, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton's (3-2) three-game winning streak came to an end Wednesday night as San Diego State (3-2) defeated the Titans 3-1 in a midweek non-conference match-up in Peterson Gym behind the Aztec's Mellissa Stapley's 18 kills and .484 hitting percentage.

The Titans took game one 30-25 but then dropped the final three 22-30, 22-30, and 23-30 as the Aztecs ended their small two-game losing streak.

Stapley was the matches leading point-scorer as she picked up 18.5 with Fullerton's Alyssa Opeka in tow with 17.5. Opeka, fresh off her MVP performance in last weekend's Four Points Titan Classic, led the Titans in kills with 16 (.278) on the night while also collecting six digs and three blocks.

Fullerton was out-hit by the Aztecs .368-.254 but hit a hefty .452 in the game they won, taking advantage of six San Diego State hitting errors. The Titans were unable to hit better than .229 as a team in any of the three remaining games as the Aztecs hit .324, .270, .556, and .324.

Amanda Pfielschiefter, coming off an injury that has kept her out of some matches early on, hit .333 collecting nine kills in 18 attempts while leading the team in blocks with four (including one solo). Sarah Morrison also added 13 kills, but hit only .194.

San Diego State had three players with 10 digs, but Vanessa Vella, the Titans' libero led all players with 19 on the night.

Julie Geissert added two aces to lead the Fullerton squad, but was out-done by Aztec Alicia Waller who scored six aces from the line.

Cal State Fullerton will hit the road again Thursday afternoon and head to Portland State for this weekend's Crown Plaza Showcase featuring Evansville, San Francisco, Portland State and Oregon. They will look to break out of a road slump that has seen them go just 1-13 away from Titan Gym over the last two seasons. First game for the Titans will be Friday at 11:00 am.
