Fullerton, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton improved to 2-0 on the year behind Erin Saddler's second consecutive double-double as the Titans downed Appalachian State 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-18) in match four of the Crowne Plaza Titan Classic Saturday afternoon in Titan Gym.
Saddler followed her 24-kill, 16-dig Friday night performance with a 17-kill, 11-dig effort on Saturday to lead Fullerton to the win over the Mountaineers in the two team's inaugural meeting. Newcomer Torrie Brown (8 kills) and senior Alex Wolnisty (7 kills) added offensive support to Saddler and the Titans.
Fullerton's defense stifled the ASU offense by holding them to a .093 attack percentage by way of seven team blocks and 58 digs in the 3-set match. Saddler led all players with four block assists, while Kayla Neto and Alex Wolnisty each added three apiece for Fullerton. Cami Croteau led all players with 20 digs for the Titans.
Maja Jechorek was the offensive standout for Appalachian State. The hitter connected for 10 kills while also scoring a double-double with 10 digs to her credit as well. Cassie Engelgau had a team-high 12 digs in the loss.
The Titans held the lead for a majority of the match, surrendering it just once briefly in set two. The Titans hit .293 for the match and as high as .316 in set number one while keeping the Mountaineers below .135 the entire match.
Fullerton will return to the court Saturday night to face Idaho at 7:30 for the championship game. Both the Titans and Vandals are 2-0 in the tourney.
Appalachian State and Lamar are set to play in the 5:00 pm. match. Both squads are 0-2.
