RIVERSIDE, CA - Behind Tessa Sphar's 15 kills and Amanda Beyersdorff's five blocks, the Hofstra Pride downed Cal State Fullerton Titans in a non-conference season-opener for both squads 3-1 in the Physical Education Building at UC Riverside Friday afternoon.
Fullerton, designated as the home team against the New York-based Hofstra squad, fell 26-30, 30-18, 26-30, 24-30 in the four-game match. The Titans fall to 0-1 on the young season, while The Pride gets off on the right foot at 1-0.
The Titans hit just .237 to the Pride's .282 one the day with senior outside hitter Sarah Morrison leading all players with 19 kills. Alyssa Opeka (16), Danielle Hitzeman (11) and Brittany Moore (10) all added double-digit kill totals in the losing effort.
The Titans out-blocked, out-dug and out-aced the Pride, but could only out-hit the Pride in game two where they hit .314 in their only winning game of the day.
Cal State Fullerton sophomore and single-season dig record holder Vanessa Vella, continued her defensive ways as she led all players with 22 digs from the libero position. Compared, Hofstra's libero Catherine Durakis collected 16 on the day.
Fullerton hit .304 in game four in their effort to push the match to five games, but fell behind 8-1 behind Curley's serving which proved too much. The match finished in 1:53 in front of 52 fans in attendance.
