FULLERTON, Calif.--- For the second straight season, Cal State Fullerton has opened up the season with a win, as the Titans dominated from start to finish to earn a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-20) sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson, Friday morning inside Titan Gym. The match was the first of three Fullerton will compete in this weekend.
Fullerton (1-0) has now won its season opener in back-to-back seasons under head coach Ashley Preston.
"We played well today," said Preston, "I think the biggest key was our communication out there. This is really just the second year with all of us being together, so we're just trying to build that confidence and chemistry every day."
Junior Madeline Schneider was phenomenal, recording 14 kills and eight digs. Her 14 kills led all players. Savahna Costello recorded a match-best 18 digs, while Nastassja Bowman also contributed with 12 digs and four kills.
The result was never in doubt, as Fullerton jumped out to a 7-4 advantage early. After falling behind 1-0 to begin the set, the Titans launched a 10-1 run to take a 10-2 lead. They never looked back from there, taking the opening set 25-17.
The second set was more of the same, opening up a lead as high as nine before putting the Knights away 25-17 once again to take a commanding 2-0 lead heading into the third set.
Fairleigh Dickinson (0-1) kept things close in the third, eventually rallying to get within 15-12, but Fullerton held off the charge, outscoring the Knights 10-8 to close out the set and the match.
Fullerton will play Drake later tonight at 7:30 pm PT inside Titan Gym.
