Women's Tennis Struggles on Day One at ITA West Regionals

SAN DIEGO, CA - The Cal State Fullerton women's tennis team struggled out of the gates during day one of the 2007 ITA West Regionals co-hosted by San Diego State and the University of San Diego on Thursday. Freshman Karina Akhmedova posted the Titans' lone victory on the afternoon in singles play, defeating SDSU's Ozge Atalay in straight sets, 7-6 (4), 6-1. Akhmedova would then fall to the tournament's No. 2 seed, UCLA's Riza Zalameda, 6-1, 6-1. Junior Shelly Injejikian and sophomore Jerusha Cruz earned bye's into the second round, but fell to UNLV's Kristina Nedeltcheva (6-1, 6-0), the No. 16 seed, and USD's Monica Wiesener (6-0, 6-1), the No. 14 seed, respectively. Teammates Ashley Litchfield, Erin Wiesener, and Cheyenne Inglis all lost in the first round. In doubles play, only one of the three Titan duos are alive as the team of Wiesener and Litchfield are into the second round after a bye.
