FULLERTON, CA - Form prevailed on Friday as seven of the tournament's top eight singles seeds posted victories and advanced to the third round of the Cal State Fullerton Fall Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament on Friday afternoon at the Titan Courts.
Play continues on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with third-round singles matches with doubles play continuing at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
Top-seeded Katy Williams of Long Beach State defeated LMU's Shawnell Russell in straight sets after a first-round bye, 6-1, 6-2, and will meet Cal State Northridge's Kristy Fournell, who posted a pair of wins, in Saturday's third round.
Second-seeded Tania Rice of Pepperdine also won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, over Cal State Northridge's Canna Furuta and will meet Cal Poly's Diane Filip in the third round.
Four of the remaining five seeds were taken to three sets, all prevailing, with only Pepperdine's Jill Braverman winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, over UC Irvine's Ali Borowicz.
The only seeded singles casuality was Pepperdine's Caroline Raba, who fell to Cal Poly's Maria Malec after retiring in the second set.
Le defeated USC's Katcha Decker-Sadowski in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round before toppling Pepperdine's Alicia Poladin, 6-1, 6-0, to move on to the third round. Le will face seventh-seeded Kanykey Koichumanova of Cal State Northridge on Saturday morning in the third round.
Domela, the tournament's No. 6 seed, defeated UC Riverside's Erynne Oki, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, in the second round after earning a first-round bye. Domela will meet Cal Poly's Shannon Brady in the third round on Saturday.
Freshman Brandy Andrews also posted a first-round victory, defeating Cal State Northridge's Ashley Macias, 6-3, 6-3, but fell in the second round to Pepperdine's Anete Bandere, 6-3, 7-5.
In doubles play, all four seeds earned a bye into Saturday's second round. Three of the four Fullerton entries fell in first round action on day one with the duo of Domela and Le earning a bye.
