Titans' Singles Soar Over Eagles in 5-1 Win

March 24, 2011

FULLERTON, CA - The Cal State Fullerton women's tennis team claimed back-to-back wins for only the second time this season, using strong performances in singles play to beat Mother Nature and Eastern Washington, 5-1, on Wednesday afternoon (March 24) at the Titan Courts.

The win pushed the Titans' record to 5-14 overall and evened their mark at 2-2 during the team's seven-match season-ending home stand.

With doubles matches pushed to the back burner because of the threat of rain in Southern California, the two teams took to the courts for singles play first and, it turns out, Fullerton wouldn't need the doubles point after all.

The Titans won four of the six singles matches in straight sets, including sophomore Tiffany Mai's third-straight win at the No. 1 spot and dominating wins by freshmen Morgan McIntosh at No. 2 (6-0, 6-1) and Megan Sandford at No. 4 (6-0, 6-0).

Monica Rodriguez rallied for a third Fullerton point, coming back from a 6-2 loss in the first set against Ryann Warner to post a three-set, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, victory. Karina Akhmedova then wrapped things up with a 6-0, 6-2, victory at No. 5.

Eastern Washington's lone win came at the No. 6 spot as Rocio Norena defeated Katie Nichols, 6-0, 6-0.

Cal State Fullerton closes out the week with a Big West Conference battle on Saturday (March 26) at 10 a.m. as the Titans host Pacific.
