Fullerton, Calif. - For the third match in a row, the outcome of Cal State Fullerton's women's tennis match went down to the final set and Amherst College won the tie-breaker to log a 4-3 non-conference win Friday on the Titan Courts.
Amherst's Safi Aly beat Jessica Pepa, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 at No. 6 singles for the decisive point. The Lady Jeffs (3-1) are ranked No. 2 in the nation in Div. III and were national runnersup last season. Fullerton dropped to 6-8.
The Titans had fallen behind, 3-0, after losing the doubles point (2-1) and the first two singles matches that were completed. They proceeded to win three singles matches but came up just short in the clincher.
Kalika Slevcove had the best day for the Titans, winning her No. 5 singles match, 6-4, 7-6 over Zoe Pangalos and teaming with Monica Rodriguez to win at No. 2 doubles, 8-6, over Jennifer Newman and Pangalos.
Fullerton is idle until Apr. 12 when it plays at Long Beach State. Amherst, which beat Vanguard and Concordia earlier in the week, plays at Pomona before heading back home to Massachusetts.
