FULLERTON, CA - The return of Leslie Bullock and Shelly Injejikian helped spark the Cal State Fullerton women's tennis team to a much needed 7-0 win against CSU rival Cal State Bakersfield, Thursday on Titan Courts.
The Titans were coming off four straight losses by a 7-0 score, and had been playing without Injejikian for the last two matches. Their No. 1 player Bullock retired from her last match with hip pain. With a healthier squad the Titans won every match they played against the Roadrunners, sweeping both the singles and doubles.
In doubles the veteran team of Cheyenne Inglis and Injejikian got back together after a few matches off and combined to pick up the 8-4 win over CSUB's Nefeli Diamanti and Kaydee Graham in the No. 1 position. At No. 2, Brandy Andrews and Jaycee Cruz won their match against Ashlee Thorneycroft and Sara Mijwel 8-5. Bullock returned to the court to team up with Karina Akhmedova in the No. 3 position. The duo of Bullock and Akhmedova won their match with Kristi Jenkins and Veronica Dimas 8-5.
CSF kept things rolling in singles, winning all six matches they played. At No. 1 Bullock didn't show any negative effects from the hip pain she was forced to retire from her last match with. She dominated Diamanti with a 6-0, 6-0 win.
In the No. 2 position Injejikian showed a little rust after not playing the last two matches for CSF, but bounced back to cruise to a win against Dimas. After losing 1-6 in the first set, Injejikian picked up her game and won 6-2, 6-2 in the second and third sets.
Akhmedova's match with Jenkins was a little closer but she pulled through down the stretch with a 6-3, 6-4 win. Cruz won her match at No. 4 against Graham with a 7-6, 1-6, (10-6) effort.
At No. 5 Andrews scored a straight sets victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Mijwel. Inglis anchored the Titans in the No. 6 position with a three set win over Thorneycroft. After dropping the first set 3-6, Inglis found her stroke and handled her business with a 6-1, 6-1 effort to close out the match.
The Titans head out on the road to play two Big West Conference matches this weekend. They take on Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo on Saturday at 1 p.m., then head off to UC Santa Barbara to battle the Gauchos at 1 p.m. on Sunday. CSF plays at home again when they host Columbia on Titan Courts, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m.
