Tennis Falls to Azusa Pacific, 5-2
Jan. 30, 2008
FULLERTON, CA - Junior Shelly Injejikian and freshman Karina Akhmedova each posted singles victories on the afternoon, but it wasn't enough as the host Titans fell to Azusa Pacific, 5-2, on Wednesday at the Titan Courts. Injejikian defeated the Cougars' Casey Wetzig in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot while Akhmedova defeated Lindsey Cloninger at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-1. Azusa Pacific, ranked No. 6 in the NAIA polls, took the early lead, taking two out of three doubles matches for the 1-0 lead. Fullerton's only win in doubles came at the No. 3 spot where Brandy Andrews and Jerusha Cruz defeated Casey Wetzig and Cloninger, 8-6. The other two doubles matches were closely contested, but APU won both by identical 8-6 scores. The Cougars then went on to clinch the match by winning three of the four singles matches in straight sets with the lone exception at the No. 1 spot where APU's Bay Daniels defeated Erin Wiesener, 6-3, 4-6 (10-8).
