The Toreros entered the 2012 WCC tournament as the No. 3 seed, but upset Pepperdine to clinch their first WCC championship. Making its second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance in 2012, San Diego was eliminated by Vanderbilt in the first round.

The Aztecs finished the 2012 season with a 12-14 record and a 5-2 mark in the Mountain West Conference. San Diego State also defeated Cal State Fullerton, 7-0, on Jan. 28, 2012.
