FULLERTON, CA - Former Cal State Fullerton outfielder Ashley Van Boxmeer was one of 17 players that helped lead the Canadian Women's Softball Team to the gold medal at the 2007 World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand.
Van Boxmeer, a three-time All-Big West Conference selection with the Titans from 2005-07, was one of 27 players competing for a spot on Canada's Senior National Team that will compete for Olympic gold in Beijing in 2008.
The invitees to the Olympic selection camp will be announced on Aug. 23 while the final 15 players selected for the 2008 Olympic Games will be announced later in the fall.
She hit .333 (3-for-9) for the tournament with three RBI and a hit by pitch as Canada posted wins over Thailand (9-0), Italy (9-0), South Africa (15-0), and Chinese Taipei (6-0) in round-robin play.
The Canadians then opened the championship bracket with a 9-2 win over the United States before defeating Chinese Taipei twice by the scores of 2-1 and 5-4 to earn the gold medal, rebounding from a 4-0 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the seventh in the championship game.
This summer, Van Boxmeer was hitting .360 (9-for-25) for Team Canada with pair of doubles, a home run, and 12 RBI through Aug. 14.
