Martinez Hits Her Way to Softball Big West Player of the Week Honors
May 14, 2007
FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton sophomore infielder Courtney Martinez was named the final Big West Conference Player of the Week for the 2007 season after her hitting exploits at the plate helped the Titans to a sweep of UC Riverside to close out the year.
Martinez was honored by the league office for the first time in her brief career and became the third Fullerton player to be so honored this season joining two-time winner Jessica Doucette and Lauren Lupinetti.
Martinez hit a blistering .583 (7-for-12) for the weekend series against the Highlanders with multiple hits in each of the contests, including a 3-for-4 finale in Saturday's 4-1 season-ending victory.
The sophomore from Chino Hills, Calif., slugged .750 on the weekend with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and two RBI from the top of the Fullerton lineup. Her three-hit game in the finale was her team-best fifth of the season and her performance on the weekend upped her season total to 11 multi-hit games on the year - good for third on the squad.
Martinez extended her hitting streak to a season-high five games during which she is hitting .450 (9-for-20) and, in the process, raised her batting average 23 points to .276 on the season (fourth on the team).
Martinez and the Titans head east to Columbus, Ohio, this weekend for the 2007 NCAA Regionals hosted by Ohio State. Fullerton, the No. 3 seed in the regional, will meet the host and No. 2-seeded Buckeyes in the second game on Friday (May 18) at approximately 4:30 p.m. PDT.
