FIRST PITCH: The Cal State Fullerton softball team (3-21 overall) hosts its final tournament of the 2010 season this week, welcoming 16 of the nation's top teams to Anderson Family Field for the 5th annual Judi Garman Classic to be held on campus. The tournament begins with two games on Wednesday night (March 17) beginning at 4:30 p.m. and runs through Sunday (March 21) with play beginning on both fields at 9 a.m. each day.

IN THE POLLS: The Judi Garman Classic annually draws the nation's top tier teams and the 2010 edition is no different. This season's field features eight of the nation's top 25 teams as well as two more teams listed among those receiving votes. The field for 2010 includes No. 1 Washington, No. 2 Arizona, No. 4 Michigan, No. 7 Arizona State, No. 11 Oklahoma, No. 15 Texas, No. 23 Louisiana-Lafayette, and No. 24 Louisville along with Fresno State and DePaul, which are receiving votes... CAL STATE FULLERTON'S TOURNAMENT OPPONENTS
ABOUT PURDUE: The Boilermakers enter this weekend's tournament with an 8-11 overall record... Purdue will also take on New Mexico, UNLV, Utah, Louisville, Louisiana-Lafayette, Arizona State, and Washington along with the Titans... senior Liane Horiuchi paces the offense, batting .347 with 20 runs scored, seven extra-base hits and a perfect 16-for-16 record in stolen bases this season... junior Suzie Rzegocki is one of four pitchers who have seen time in the circle for the Boilermakers this season, posting a 5-8 record with a 3.24 ERA.
ABOUT FRESNO STATE: The Bulldogs enter the tournament with a 16-9 overall record... Fresno State will also take on Louisiana-Lafayette, Virginia, DePaul, and New Mexico along with the Titans... Caitlin Stiglich leads a powerful offense, batting .365 to lead eight players hitting .300 or better... FSU as a team is hitting .302 in 25 contests this season... Morgan Melloh (8-6, 2.72) has struck out 119 batters in 79.2 innings while Mackenzie Oakes is 7-3 overall with a 2.15 ERA... opponents are hitting just .223 against the Bulldogs' staff this season.
ABOUT TEXAS: The Longhorns enter the tournament with a 20-4 overall record... Texas will also meet Arizona State, San Jose State, Michigan, and Louisville along with the Titans... Tallie Thrasher leads the offense, batting .486 overall on the season with six home runs and 16 RBI... six Longhorns are hitting .300 or better while they have slugged 39 home runs and outscored opponents 132-60... Blaire Luna leads the pitching staff with a 10-3 overall record and a 0.90 ERA, striking out 142 in 78 innings and holding opponents to a .110 average... opponents are hitting just .208 against the Texas pitching staff this season.
ABOUT LOUISVILLE: The Cardinals enter the tournament with a 15-8 overall record... Louisville will also face Arizona, New Mexico, Purdue, and Texas along with the Titans this weekend... Melissa Roth enters the weekend as the team's top hitter, batting .485 with 14 extra-base hits (including five home runs) and a team-best 18 RBI... a trio of pitchers have all seen significant time in the circle for the Cardinals this season: Tori Collins (5-2, 2.45 ERA, 54 K's), Chelsea Leonard (4-1, 4.13 ERA, 57 K's), and Kristen Wadwell (6-5, 4.14 ERA, 51 K's)... opponents are hitting .233 against the staff this season.
ABOUT LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE: The Ragin' Cajuns are 15-7 overall entering this week's action... Louisiana-Lafayette will also face Virginia, Fresno State, Washington, and Purdue along with the Titans this week... Vallie Gaspard leads the team offensively, batting .410 to help power the Ragin' Cajuns' offense to a team .315 average... six regulars are batting better than .300 on the year... Brittany Cuevas (8-2, 2.65 ERA) and Donna Bourgeois (7-5, 1.67) have split time in the circle with two other players combining for a total of two innings... Cuevas leads the team with 83 strikeouts while opponents are hitting just .193 against the staff this season.
SERIES RECORDS: Cal State Fullerton is 6-1 all-time against Purdue with the only loss to the Boilermakers coming at the 2008 NCAA Regionals in Los Angeles in the last meeting between the two teams... Fresno State leads the all-time series with the Titans, 38-31, and has won the last two meetings, including a 15-4 loss at this tournament in 2008 in the last meeting... the Titans lead the all-time series with Teas, 8-4-1, winning last year's meeting at this tournament by a 1-0 score... Saturday's meeting with Louisville will be the first between the two schools... the series with Louisiana-Lafayette is tied, 5-5, but the Ragin' Cajuns have won the last two meetings, including a 3-1 loss at this tournament in 2004.
TITANS AT THE PONY... ERR... KIA... ERR... JUDI GARMAN: Cal State Fullerton is a combined 108-52 (.675) all time in 30 seasons in its showcase event that has been held under numerous monikers since its inception in 1981... the Titans were 74-22 at the PONY Tournament, 5-5 at the unsponsored Cal State Fullerton Tournament, 20-16 at the KIA Klassic, and are 9-9 since the event was renamed to honor Fullerton's Hall of Fame Head Coach Judi Garman in 2006... the Titans were 4-1 at last year's event, including wins over nationally ranked Oklahoma and Washington to share the tournament title (by winning percentage) with Michigan, Washington, Nebraska, and Arizona State.
