FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton senior right-hander Ari Cervantes was named the Big West Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday morning after a stellar weekend at the Titans' own DeMarini Invitational.
It is the second career weekly honor from the conference as a pitcher for the Tustin native, but the first since her sophomore season when she was 3-1 at the 2009 Judi Garman Classic with wins over nationally ranked Texas, Oklahoma, and Washington. Cervantes was named the Big West's Player of the Week last year after hitting .545 in a three-game series against UC Santa Barbara while also going 2-0 with a 0.78 ERA against the Gauchos in the circle.
Last weekend, Cervantes saw significant action all four of the Titans' contests, posting three complete-game victories and a 1.08 ERA at the DeMarini Invitational while holding opponents to a .144 batting average in four appearances, allowing just 13 hits in 26 innings pitched.
In the tournament opener, Cervantes tossed a three-hit shutout against IPFW in the Titans' 2-0 victory and allowed just two hits in a 5-1 win over Southern Miss. In the team's tournament finale, she scattered just four hits in a complete-game win over Oregon State - the second win over a Pacific-10 Conference school this season for Fullerton.
Her 1.08 ERA was fifth among tournament pitchers and she also finished third in average against, led the tournament in innings, and tied for the tournament led in wins. Cervantes improved to 5-4 overall with the performance, standing just one win shy of her total from all of last season when she finished 6-19 in 35 appearances.
After a quiet Monday, Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Tuesday (March 8) at 4 p.m. with a doubleheader against Troy University at Anderson Family Field.
