One More Trip to the Desert for Softball as Titans Head to Palm Springs Classic

The Cal State Fullerton softball team (5-5 overall in 2006) plays in its final preseason tournament away from home this weekend as the Titans travel to the Palm Springs Classic in Cathedral City, Calif., hosted by Oregon State.

Cal State Fullerton is receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and Softball coaches polls w Of the Titans' five opponents this weekend, only one is ranked in the top 25 - Texas A&M is ranked No. 8 in both polls.

The Palm Springs Classic is a three-day, 23-team event that features six of the eight teams that have won an NCAA title, 18 All-Americans from the 2005 season, 15 NCAA Regional teams from last year, three 2005 College World Series qualifiers, and 11 teams ranked in the final 2005 top 25 poll.

&\#149; KANSAS: The Jayhawks enter the week with a 4-5 record after going 2-3 at the Desert Classic in Las Vegas. Kansas has lost three straight and is led offensively by senior infielder Destiny Frankenstein (.478-6-12) and in the circle by senior Serena Settlemier (2-2, 0.50).

&\#149; ILLINOIS-CHICAGO: UIC is 1-4 overall, earning its first win over Southern Utah at the Desert Classis in Las Vegas. Junior catcher Elizabeth Jacoby leads the team in hitting at .444 while freshman lefty Sarah Clynes is 1-1 in the circle with a 4.97 ERA.

&\#149; MARYLAND: The Terrapins are 3-2 overall after opening the season at the Georgia State Invitational. Senior catcher Nikki Smith is hitting .455 while senior right-hander Crystal Crews is 3-0 with a 0.77 ERA.

&\#149; OKLAHOMA STATE: The Cowgirls enter the week at 2-4 after going 1-4 at the Campbell Cartier Classic in San Diego and downing Texas-San Antonio last week. Junior Lauren Kitchens leads the team offensively, hitting .375 while Chelsey Barclay is 1-1 with a 1.79 ERA.

&\#149; TEXAS A&M: The Aggies is 9-2 overall after sweeping a doubleheader from Houston on Wednesday night. to extend their winning streak to six straight games. Sophomore infielder Jamie Hinshaw is hitting .343 with 10 RBI while sophomore Megan Gibson is 5-0 with a 1.75 ERA.

The Titans are a combined 34-19 overall against this weekend's opponents w Fullerton will be meeting a pair of schools in softball for the first time this weekend in Maryland and Illinois-Chicago the Titans have won 11 straight against w the Cowgirls and won the last meeting with Texas A&M in 2003 in Arizona w the last time the Jayhawks and Titans met was almost a year ago to the day as Kansas downed Fullerton, 3-2 in eight innings in Palm Springs.

Fullerton has played in Palm Springs in each of the last two seasons without much success, posting just a 3-6 record in that span with two of those losses coming in extra innings.
