Jan. 26, 2006
FULLERTON, CA -
The Cal State Fullerton softball team will open the 2006 season receiving votes in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Preseason Coaches Poll released on Jan. 25.
The Titans, who also received votes in the preseason ESPN.com/USA Softball poll earlier in the week, got 10 votes from the panel and were one of two Big West Conference schools (Long Beach State) to be listed.
Defending national champion Michigan received 21 first-place votes and 714 points overall to lead No. 2-ranked UCLA, which received eight first-place nods and 704 points overall.
Tennessee, Texas, and Arizona round out the top five.
Fullerton will face 15 teams ranked in the USA Today/NFCA preseason poll - nine of those ranked in the top 20 and six more receiving votes.
Fullerton finished the 2005 season with a 30-21 overall record and a trip to the NCAA Tournament where it finished second in the regional to eventual national runner-up UCLA. The Titans reached the postseason for the 23rd time in the 26-year history of the program and received votes in both of the final 2005 coaches polls.
The Titans return seven position starters and all four pitchers from last seasons squad led by first-team All-West Region honoree Candice Baker, and All-Big West Conference honorees Tiffany Hoff, Marissa Marzan, and Ashley Van Boxmeer.
