Jan. 23, 2008

FULLERTON, CA - The Cal State Fullerton softball team will begin the 2008 season as one of the nation's elite, opening the year ranked No. 21 in the country according to the USA Today/NFCA Preseason Coaches Poll released on Wednesday afternoon.

The Titans earned their first national preseason ranking since 2004 following a stellar campaign that saw them finish 41-15 overall and a 20-1 mark in Big West Conference play.

Fullerton, which was picked to finish second in the Big West in 2008, returns eight starters and nine letter winners from last season's squad that finished 38-23 overall and 13-5 in league action in 2007.

The Titans finished last season ranked No. 16 according to the NFCA after winning an NCAA regional for the first time since 1995 and becoming the first Big West school to advance to the super regional round.

This year's schedule is jam-packed with top 25 schools, as Cal State Fullerton is scheduled to meet 12 of the preseason top 25 - including six of the top 10 - and four more schools that are receiving votes.

Cal State Fullerton opens its 2008 season on Feb. 8 at Anderson Family Field, hosting Santa Clara at 6 p.m.
