Titans Take Series With 4-0 Shutout
April 5, 2009
RIVERSIDE, CA - Sophomore right-hander Ari Cervantes tossed a five-hit complete-game shutout while senior Courtney Martinez had a pair of hits and an RBI to help lift visiting Cal State Fullerton to a 4-0 shutout of UC Riverside on Sunday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field.
The Titans win their second Big West Conference series of the season in improving to 16-17 overall and 4-2 in league play. The Highlanders fell to 11-22 overall and 2-4 in conference games.
Cervantes (11-9) notched her third shutout of the season, walking just one and not allowing a runner past second base all afternoon. Stephanie Marshall (5-9), who held Cal State Fullerton to just two hits in 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief on Saturday, suffered the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out three in six innings.
The Titans got all the runs they would need in the third inning, using four hits to plate a trio of runs. Senior Lauren Lupinetti extended her hitting streak to a team-best six games by leading-off the inning with a single and moving to second on a sacrifice by Francesca Gonzales.
After a strikeout for out number two, freshman Trina Harrison drove home pinch runner Adriana Martinez with a single back up the middle to make it 1-0. With Harrison moving to second on the throw home, Courtney Martinez made it 2-0 with a single to right field and she would come around to score on Samantha Dollarhide's double to the wall in left for the 3-0 lead.
Fullerton would cap the scoring with a single run in the sixth as Gonzales doubled to the right field corner, moved to third on a ground out and scored on Harrison's sacrifice fly to left field for the 4-0 lead.
Cervantes then shut the door, striking out three of the final four batters she faced and retiring nine of the final 11 batters over the last three innings, working around a pair of singles in the sixth. UC Riverside stranded six runners on base for the game - three of those in scoring position.
Courtney Martinez finished 2-for-3 on the day while five other Titans finished with hits. Brittany Keeney and Krystal Marquez had two hits apiece to account for all but one of the Highlanders' hits on the day.
Cal State Fullerton returns to the diamond next weekend as the Titans travel north for a three-game series at UC Davis. Due to the Easter holiday, the series opens with a doubleheader on Friday (April 10) at 1:30 p.m. with a single game finale scheduled for Saturday (April 11) at 12 p.m.
