Early Deficit Sinks Titans Against No. 24 Louisville
March 20, 2010
FULLERTON, CA - Louisville's Alicja Wolny finished 1-for-2 with three RBI while Melissa Roth drove in two more to help lead the No. 24 Cardinals to a 6-2 win over host Cal State Fullerton on Saturday afternoon in the fourth day of play at the 2010 Judi Garman Classic at Anderson Family Field.
The loss dropped the Titans to 4-24 overall and 1-3 in tournament play while Louisville improved to 18-10 overall and 2-2 in the tournament.
Kristen Wadwell (9-6) posted the win in relief for the Cardinals, scattering just three hits in 3 2/3 innings of work. Tori Collins started and allowed two runs on two hits in 3 1/3 innings before being lifted in the fourth.
Fullerton junior Ari Cervantes (2-11) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in just 1 1/3 innings. Redshirt sophomore Krystal Heinle pitched well in relief, allowing just one run on three hits in the final 5 2/3 innings.
Wolny's two-run single in the first staked the Cardinals to the early lead and Louisville added four more in the second on a two-run double by Roth, a bases-loaded walk to Wolny, and a sacrifice fly by Chelsea Bemis for all the runs it would need.
The Titans answered with two runs in the bottom of the second as junior Torrie Anderson reached on an infield single and scored on sophomore Trina Harrison's sixth home run of the season to make it a 6-2 ballgame. Wadwell then stifled Fullerton's offense, as the Titans could muster only three hits over the final five innings, stranding four on base.
Anderson finished 2-for-2 with a walk while senior Kadie Baldwin finished 2-for-3 to help pace the Fullerton offense.
The Titans close out tournament play on Sunday (March 21) at 11:15 a.m. as they host No. 23 Louisiana-Lafayette.
