FULLERTON, CA - Sophomore Ariel Tsuchiyama slugged her first career home run and five Fullerton players finished with two hits on the night to lead the host Titans to a 10-0 five-inning shutout victory over Notre Dame, closing out the first day of the 2011 Judi Garman Classic at Anderson Family Field.
The win improved Fullerton to 8-11 overall on the season as senior Ari Cervantes (7-5) and sophomore Aly Fascetti combined on a three-hit shutout of the Fighting Irish, who fell to 15-3 overall after opening the tournament with a 2-1 upset of No. 9 Oklahoma.
Cervantes allowed only a double and a pair of singles while striking out one in four innings of work, but it was the Titans' bats who stole the show as they banged out a season-high 14 hits.
Tsuchiyama's first career blast over the wall in right field was the big blow in a six-run third inning for Fullerton, which also got an RBI single from Cervantes to start the scoring and a pair of runs on an infield hit and subsequent three-base throwing error on a ball by Leesa Harris. The freshman beat out a throw by the Notre Dame third baseman, but the throw to an uncovered third base trying to get Adriana Martinez, sailed into foul ground and scooted down the left field line, allowing Martinez to score and Harris to circle the bases for the sixth run of the inning, knocking starter Jody Valdivia (5-2) from the game.
Valdivia allowed four earned on nine hits while striking out three in 2 2/3 innings while O'Donnell was tagged for four runs on five hits in 1 1/3 innings of work.
Cal State Fullerton continues tournament play on Thursday night (March 17) at approximately 7:30 p.m. as the Titans take on No. 5 Michigan at Anderson Family Field.
