FULLERTON, CA - An RBI single by DePaul's Amber Patton snapped a 5-5 tie and keyed a four-run eighth inning as the Blue Demons rallied from two runs down to defeat Cal State Fullerton, 9-6, in extra innings on Friday night at Anderson Family Field.
The loss was the fourth consecutive for the Titans as they fell to 14-12 overall and went winless in pool play for the first time since 2004. Fullerton falls into Saturday's consolation championship bracket against the third place team from "Pool B" at 11:15 a.m. on the south field.
DePaul improved to 15-5 overall, posting a perfect 3-0 in pool play and advances to the championship bracket where the Blue Demons will meet the second-place team from "Pool B" at 4 p.m.
Trailing by two runs heading into its final at-bat, DePaul rallied for a pair to tie the game and send the Titans to extra innings for the second consecutive game.
Patton led off the seventh with a double and scored when Marcy Wilus' single to left was misplayed by the fielder, allowing Patton to scamper home and make it 5-4.
After a walk and a fielder's choice that saw the Fullerton defense unable to get the out at third on a sacrifice attempt, Sandy Vojik lined a 1-2 offering to right field, scoring Wilus from third to tie the game with no outs.
Fullerton starter Candice Baker (8-7) then shut the door on the Blue Demons with a strikeout and a pair of groundouts to end the inning.
The Titans went quietly in the bottom of the seventh to set up DePaul's offensive outburst in the eighth.
Shea Warren, who was placed on second in the international tie-breaker format, was safe at third as the throw on Kate Sheaks' sacrifice attempt was thrown wide and she came around to score one batter later as Patton, who finished 4-for-5, laced a single to left, moving Sheaks to third and scoring Warren to make it 6-5.
Wilus and Vojik tacked on two more with a pair of RBI singles and Linda Secka scored the final run in the frame when she reached home before Vojik was thrown out trying to steal after oversliding second base.
Baker pitched all eight innings, allowing six earned on 13 hits, walking two and striking out seven. Heteniak (5-2) earned the win with two innings of relief, allowing an unearned run on two hits and striking out three.
Cal State Fullerton jumped out to the quick lead, scoring a pair on a two-run single up the middle by Munoz to make it 2-0.
DePaul responded with a run in the second on a home run by Heteniak and tied it on another round-tripper by Sheaks with one out in the third. The Blue Demons took their first lead on an infield single by Heteniak, plating Patton for the 3-2 advantage.
The Titans rallied to tie it on a double by Baker in the fifth and took the lead in the sixth on a two-run home run by Lupinetti, her fourth of the season, to make it 5-3.
Lupinetti led Fullerton with her 3-for-4 night, scoring a run and driving in three. Munoz also had multiple hits for the Titans.
