FULLERTON, CA - The Cal State Fullerton softball team moved to 2-0 in the 2006 Judi Garman Classic on Thursday night as junior Candice Baker scattered just six hits and three different Titans had a pair of hits to help lift Fullerton to a 6-1 win over Florida State.
The victory improved the Titans' overall record to 16-13 overall on the season while the Seminoles fell to 19-12 overall.
Baker (11-4) earned her second win of the tournament, allowing just a single run and striking out four. Melissa May (5-5) suffered the loss for Florida State, allowing just three earned on eight hits while striking out three.
Fullerton got on the scoreboard first in the second inning as Marissa Marzan led off with a single up the middle, was sacrificed over, and scored on Courtney Martinez's bloop single down the right field line to make it 1-0.
The Titans added two more in the fourth capitalizing on a pair of Florida State errors. Marzan reached on a fielder's choice and was safe at second on Ashlee Weatherford's fielder's choice when the throw to second by the pitcher was in the dirt.
Senior Molly Perez followed with another sac bunt, but the throw from the third baseman sailed into right field, allowing Marzan to score from second base to make it 2-0. Martinez then followed with her second run-scoring hit of the night, smacking a single to left to score Weatherford and make it 3-0.
Two more runs crossed the plate for the Titans in the fifth as Ashley Van Boxmeer singled to lead off the inning and scored one batter later on Katie Gollhardt's third home run of the season to make it 5-0.
FSU finally broke through against Baker in the sixth as Natasha Jacob reached on an infield bunt single and eventually came around to score on Carly Brieske's ground-rule double to left to make it 5-1.
Cal State Fullerton got the run back in the seventh as Jenna Wheeler reached on the first of two errors by the rightfielder, eventually scoring on the second of the two as Kiki Munoz's pop-up was dropped, allowing Wheeler to scamper home for the final 6-1 tally.
Van Boxmeer, Gollhardt, and Martinez each had two hits to lead the Titans while six different Seminoles accounted for their hits.
Fullerton closes out the pool play portion of the 2006 Judi Garman Classic on Friday evening at 7 p.m. as the Titans take on Arizona State. Cal State Fullerton Hall of Fame Head Coach Judi Garman will be honored in a pre-game ceremony as will the Titans' 1986 NCAA National Championship squad.
