LAKEWOOD, CA - Junior Ashley Carter finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and every Titan starter finished with at least one hit on the day as Cal State Fullerton closed out the 2012 Long Beach State Invitational with a 13-4 five-inning rout of Utah State on Sunday morning at Mayfair Park in Lakewood, Calif.
The victory improved the Titans to 12-14 overall as they finished 3-1 in the event while the Aggies fell to 8-12 overall with the loss.
Carter's three hits were part of a 14-hit attack for Fullerton, which rebounded from being restricted to just one hit 24 hours earlier in a loss to UNLV. The Titans finished with double-digit runs for the fourth time this season while notching double-digit hits for the sixth time in 2012. For the tournament, Cal State Fullerton averaged 7.8 runs per game and almost nine hits per contest.
An error and an RBI single by Carter in the second broke a 1-1 tie after Eliza Crawford's RBI double in the first gave the Titans an early lead. Fullerton tacked on five more runs in the third on two-run singles by Emily Vizcarra and Carter and an RBI infield hit by Adriana Martinez for an 8-1 lead before adding another with an RBI groundout by Kirsten Lambertson in the fourth for an eight-run lead.
Utah State avoided the run rule in its half of the fourth on RBI doubles by H. Froton and Christina Cummings to make it 9-3, but another RBI single by Crawford and a three-run home run by Anissa Young (her team-best fifth of the year) put the game out of reach for the Aggies, who could add only one more on a two-out RBI single by Froton before a pop-up ended the game.
Making her fifth consecutive start, freshman Desiree Ybarra (7-7) earned the win in the circle for the Titans, allowing four earned on eight hits while striking out four in the complete-game effort. Mandy Harmon (3-7) started and was stuck with the loss, allowing eight runs on 10 hits in just 2 2/3 innings of work.
Martinez, Crawford, and Sheffler all finished with two hits for the Titans while six of the nine Fullerton starters drove in runs. Christine Thomsen and Froton each had two hits to pace the Aggies.
Cal State Fullerton returns home on Wednesday (March 14) to host one of the nation's premier events, welcoming 15 other teams to Southern California for the five-day 2012 Judi Garman Classic at Anderson Family Field. The Titans open with a doubleheader against Notre Dame and Purdue on Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m. while also facing Arizona on Friday (March 16), Iowa on Saturday (March 17), and Penn State on Sunday (March 18).
