No. 4 UCLA Edges Cal State Fullerton, 1-0, in 10-Inning Battle

March 8, 2006

Box Score

LOS ANGELES, CA - UCLA centerfielder Tara Henry's one-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning drove home Lisa Dodd with the game-winning run as the No. 4 Bruins defeated Cal State Fullerton, 1-0, in a Wednesday matinee at Easton Stadium.

The Titans fell to 13-11 overall while the Bruins improved to 20-1 overall.

Sophomore Dana Crucil and senior Marissa Marzan combined to hold the Bruins to no runs on eight hits through nine innings before Dodd led off the bottom of the 10th with a double to left center and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Celina Rubalcaba.

Ashley Herrera followed with a walk to put runners on the corners for Henry, who lined a single to left, scoring Dodd to end the contest.

Sophomore Anjelica Selden (12-1) held the Titans' bats at bay, allowing only three hits and striking out 19 batters while walking only four in the complete-game effort.

Marzan (3-3) ended up with the loss for the Titans, allowing the lone run on six hits in 6 2/3 innings of relief.

UCLA stranded 13 runners on base - leaving seven in scoring position. The Titans, who stranded nine runners of their own, had a golden scoring opportunity in the fifth when Courtney Martinez drew a one-out walk and moved to third on Ashlee Weatherford's double to left.

However, Selden worked out of that jam, getting Crystal Vieyra and pinch-hitter Kiki Munoz to fly out to end the inning.

Fullerton also had a chance in the 10th inning when Martinez and Weatherford were both hit by pitches and both moved into scoring position on a sacrifice by Vieyra, but Selden struck out the next two batters to set up Henry's heroics.

Aside from Weatherford's double, Molly Perez also had a double and Jenna Wheeler added a hit for the Titans.

Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Friday (March 10) as the Titans travel south to San Diego State for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
