FULLERTON, CA - A two-out, two-run error with runners in scoring position broke a scoreless tie and visiting East Carolina exploded for eight runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away, handing Cal State Fullerton a 10-0 loss on Tuesday night at Anderson Family Field.
The loss dropped the Titans to 9-12 overall heading into this weekend's play at the Long Beach Marriott Invitational that begins on Friday. The Pirates improved to 8-10 overall on the season, snapping a six-game losing streak dating back to Feb. 25.
ECU starter Sarah Christian (6-5) allowed just one hit on the night, an infield single by Adriana Martinez in the fourth inning, and struck out four in the complete-game victory, allowing just five baserunners. Desiree Ybarra (4-6) suffered the loss despite striking out a career high-tying eight batters against only one walk, allowing five earned on nine hits in six innings.
Both teams combined for just two hits through four innings before the Pirates finally broke through against the Titans. Chelsea Kaluhiokalani-Glackin singled with one out, stole second, and moved to third on Kristi Oshiro's single two batters later. Oshiro then stole second to put a pair in scoring position for Alex Fieldhouse, whose potential inning-ending ground ball bounced through the legs of a Titan fielder and into left field, allowing both runners to score and make it 2-0.
Fullerton had a runner reach third in the sixth, but Christian wriggled out of the jam with three ground balls, and set the stage for East Carolina's huge seventh inning. The Pirates sent 13 batters to the plate in the seventh, loading the bases with three-straight singles and making it a 3-0 game on Oshiro's RBI single.
A fielder's choice and another error plated a fourth run before Priscilla Velasquez doubled down the line in right to score a pair and, two batters later, Jordan Lewis slugged a grand slam to right centerfield to cap the scoring.
The Titans will open the Long Beach Marriott Invitational at home on Friday hosting Charleston Southern and Michigan State. The Buccaneers and Spartans will meet at 3 p.m. followed by Fullerton and Michigan State at approximately 5 p.m. and the Titans and Buccaneers at 7 p.m.
Cal State Fullerton then takes on UNLV on Saturday (March 10) at 3 p.m. at the 49ers Softball Complex before meeting Utah State on Sunday (March 11) at Mayfair Park in Lakewood, Calif., at 11:15 a.m.
