No. 16 Northwestern Shuts Down Cal State Fullerton, 4-0

FULLERTON, CA - Northwestern starter Eileen Canney pitched five perfect innings and struck out 10 batters as the No. 16 Wildcats shutout Cal State Fullerton, 4-0, on Friday night at the Titan Softball Complex. The Titans fell to 9-8 overall on the season while Northwestern improved to 9-4. Canney (3-2) retired the first 15 batters she faced until Titan sophomore Kiki Munoz broke up the perfect game with a single back up the middle to lead off the sixth inning. She allowed only one other baserunner - a walk to Molly Perez to lead off the seventh - in earning her third win of the season. Fullerton junior Brook Weekley (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in two innings of work. Senior Marissa Marzan tossed five innings one one-hit softball, striking out three. The Wildcats scored all their runs in the first two innings, plating a single run in the first inning on an RBI single by Sheila McCorkle to make it 1-0. Northwestern added three more in the second on an infield hit by Katie Logan and a two-run double by Garland Cooper to account for all the scoring. Cal State Fullerton continues play at the Worth Invitational on Saturday morning (Mar. 4) at 1:30 p.m. as the Titans take on Texas Tech in the first of two contests on the day. Fullerton then faces Oregon State at approximately 3:45 p.m. |
