CATHEDRAL CITY, CA - Indiana's Sara Olson scattered just four hits in the complete-game effort and a pair of Hoosiers finished with two runs batted in on the night as they handed Cal State Fullerton a 5-2 defeat on day two of the Cathedral City Classic hosted by Oregon State.
The loss was the third-straight for the Titans (2-6) while Indiana evened its record at 7-7 overall on the year with the win.
Junior Adriana Martinez finished with two of Fullerton's four hits on the night, finishing 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. Freshman Lauren Mario and sophomore Ariel Tsuchiyama also added hits for the Titans, who were held to two runs or fewer for the sixth time this season
Senior Ari Cervantes (2-3) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing five runs on 11 hits while striking out four without a walk.
In addition to improving her record to 2-0 in the circle, Olson also finished 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, helping power an 11-hit attack by the Hoosiers. Ashley Warrum also added two hits for Indiana while Meaghan Murphy and Jenna Abraham each drove in a pair.
After leaving a runner at third base in the first, the Titans pushed across the game's first run in the second as two walks and an infield hit loaded the bases for Tsuchiyama, who also drew a free pass to score Mario for the 1-0 lead.
That advantage lasted until the fourth when Abraham doubled to right centerfield, driving home a pair to gain the advantage for Indiana, which added two more in the fifth on Olson's RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Murphy to make it 4-1.
Fullerton got a run back in its half of the fifth as Martinez led-off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored on an error on Nicole Johnson's groundout to make it 4-2.
Indiana capped the scoring in the seventh as Olson doubled following a fielder's choice that put a pair in scoring position for Murphy, who singled through the left side for the final 5-2 score.
The Titans close out play at the Cathedral City Classic on Sunday (Feb. 26) with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. as Fullerton takes on Syracuse followed by Long Island at 1 p.m.
