Titans Close Out Desert Trip With 7-2 Win Over Long Island

Feb. 24, 2008

Box Score

FULLERTON, CA - Senior Kiki Munoz finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI while senior Jessica Doucette struck out 10 in the complete-game effort as Cal State Fullerton closed out the 2008 Palm Springs Classic with a 7-2 win over Long Island University on Sunday afternoon in Cathedral City, Calif.

The Titans improved to 6-6-1 overall while the Blackbirds fell to 3-7 overall.

Doucette (3-4) allowed just two runs on five hits while walking two to earn the victory. Blaire Porter (2-3) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits in four innings of work. Jenny Giles pitched the final two innings, allowing two earned on six hits with a strikeout.

Five different Titans finished with a pair of hits as Fullerton got off to a quick start once again, using a two-out double to the gap in left centerfield by Kiki Munoz in the first to plate Courtney Martinez, who doubled two batters earlier, to give the Titans the early 1-0 lead.

Fullerton added two more in the fourth thanks to some help from the LIU defense. Sophomore Sheila Holguin led off the inning with a single and was waved all the way around when the throw to second on Jenna Wheeler's sacrifice attempt bounced into centerfield and rolled all the way to the fence when the fielder couldn't come up with it.

Freshman Torrie Anderson then followed with a deep shot down the left field line for her second home run of the season to make it 3-0.

Long Island got one of the runs back in the sixth on an RBI groundout with the bases loaded by Celina Castillo to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Fullerton answered with four more runs in the sixth on a pair of throwing errors, a single by Munoz, and an RBI ground out by Lauren Lupinetti.

The Blackbirds added another run in the seventh as Jennifer Bryden was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and scored three batters later on a double to the right centerfield gap by Lauren Kemp to cap the scoring and make it 7-2.

Kemp finished with a pair of hits as did Raylene Asman, who went 2-for-2.

Cal State Fullerton returns to the field on Wednesday (Feb. 27) at 6 p.m. as the Titans host St. John's University for a single game at Anderson Family Field prior to hosting the 2008 Worth Invitational beginning on Friday (Feb. 29).
