Anderson's Home Run Rallies Titans
Feb. 20, 2009
CATHEDRAL CITY, CA - Cal State Fullerton sophomore Torrie Anderson's three-run home run in the top of the sixth erased a two-run deficit and helped lift the Titans to a 4-2 victory over Nebraska to close out day two at the 2009 Cathedral City Classic.
Junior Sheila Holguin reached on a one-out single and moved on second on a two-out walk by junior Francesca Gonzales. That brought up Anderson, who sent a full-count offering from right hander Ashley Hagemann (2-1) over the fence in right center to erase a 2-0 Huskers lead and put the Titans up 3-2.
Holguin would add an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI single in support of winning pitcher Ari Cervantes (2-1), who went the distance in allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits, walking one and striking out two in the complete-game effort.
Hagemann allowed three runs on three hits, walking two and striking out seven in the loss before being lifted in favor of Molly Hill at the start of the seventh. Hill allowed an unearned run on two hits in her one inning of work.
Nebraska (5-1) jumped out to the early lead as Hagemann and the Huskers held the Titans (5-4) to just two baserunners through the first five innings, retiring 10 consecutive batters at one point. Darcy Rutherford led off the first with an infield single and moved all the way to third on a pair of ground balls.
That brought up Amanda Duran, whose potential inning-ending ground ball was thrown away, allowing Rutherford time to scamper home for the 1-0 lead.
The Huskers made it 2-0 in the third, again with Rutherford as the catalyst. Rutherford led off the inning with a walk, was sacrificed to second and scored on Crystal Carwile's single back up the middle.
However, that would be the extent of Nebraska's offense as Cervantes and the Fullerton defense shut the Huskers down from there on out, stranding four runners on base - two in scoring position - over the final four innings while the Titans' bats woke up in time to rally. Four of Fullerton's five hits on the night came in the final two innings as Holguin finished 3-for-4 to lead the offense.
Cal State Fullerton concludes play at the Cathedral City Classic on Saturday night (Feb. 21) as the Titans take on Long Island and Ole Miss in back-to-back games beginning at 6 p.m.
