TEMPE, AZ - Texas A&M's Kelsey Spittler's grand slam keyed a five-run third inning and the No. 19 Aggies took advantage of four errors by the Cal State Fullerton defense on Friday afternoon en route to a 6-2 victory at the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State in Tempe, AZ.
The Titans fell to 1-1 overall on the season after a 3-0 victory earlier in the day over Cal State Bakersfield while the Aggies won their season opener in improving to 1-0.
A sacrifice fly by senior Torrie Anderson in the second inning gave Fullerton the early lead, but Texas A&M pounced on the Titans in the third, sending 10 batters to the plate in the frame while taking advantage of a pair of Fullerton errors.
After a lead-off single a pair of fielder's choices that would have given the Titans two outs in the inning save for an error at second, and a walk loaded the bases for Spittler, who launched her first of the year to erase the early deficit and give the Aggies a 4-1 lead. Nicole Morgan then followed with a double and scored on a throwing error on Sydney Shannon's ground ball to make it 5-1.
Rhiannon Kliesing added a solo shot to right centerfield in the fourth to cap the scoring for the Aggies, but the Titans got a run back in the sixth as Nicole Johnson scored on a wild pitch for the final scoring.
Redshirt sophomore Katey Laban (0-1) suffered the loss for Fullerton, allowing six runs on six hits while walking five in a four-inning season debut. Sophomore Aly Fascetti then came on and allowed just one hit in two scoreless innings.
Lindsey Sisk (1-0) earned the win, allowing the two runs on seven hits while striking out five.
Tournament play continues on Saturday (Feb. 12) as Fullerton takes on Nebraska at 11:30 am MT before meeting No. 22 Oklahoma State at 2 pm MT.
