Titans Win Rain-Shortened Opener, 9-2
Feb. 8, 2009
FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton junior Francesca Gonzales finished 3-for-3 with a pair of home runs in her first game at the Division I level and the Titans slugged four home runs on the day to tie a school record and help lift them to a 9-2 rain-shortened five-inning victory over Indiana on Sunday afternoon at Anderson Family Field.
After having its first three attempts at opening the season washed out due to heavy rains in Southern California, Fullerton improved to 1-0 overall on the season, winning its season opener for the fourth consecutive season. The Hoosiers fell to 0-4 overall with the loss.
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader will not be played.
The Titans matched the school record of four home runs in a game thanks to another pair of long balls by senior Courtney Martinez - the fifth time that has happened in school history and the first since a win at Pacific on April 23, 2006. Martinez finished 2-for-2 with a game-high four RBI to lead an eight-hit Titans' attack.
Freshman Krystal Heinle (1-0) earned the win the circle, allowing just one run on one hit after carrying a no-hitter through the first 3 2/3 innings. Freshman Katey Laban allowed a run on a hit in one inning of relief in her collegiate debut.
Gonzales, a transfer from Mt. San Antonio College, also added a one-out single in the first inning to cap her day, scoring three runs in addition to her two RBI.
Fullerton scored four runs in the first inning by virtue of only one hit, taking advantage of a couple fits of wildness from the Hoosiers pitching staff. A fielder's choice by sophomore Torrie Anderson with runners at the corners scored Sheila Holguin with the first run of the game and freshman Nicole Johnson added her first career RBI when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded two batters later to make it 2-0.
Martinez made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly to center, plating Anderson, and junior Kadie Baldwin drove home her first run as a Titan when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to cap the scoring.
Cal State Fullerton added single runs in the second and third on Gonzales' and Martinez's first home runs of the day and the Titans added three more in the fourth on a solo shot by Gonzales and a two-run home run by Martinez.
Indiana broke up the shutout in its half of the fourth as Jennifer Glueckert drew a one-out walk and scored two batters later on a triple to the fence in right centerfield by Julie DiNallo - the first hit of the game for the Hoosiers. Indiana added another run on Emily Bergeson's first home run of the season to lead-off the fifth for the final 9-2 score.
Ashley Hobbs (0-1) suffered the loss for Indiana, allowing four runs and walking a pair in just two-thirds of an inning. Monica Wright (five runs on six hits in three innings) and Sara Olsen (one hit in 1 1/3 innings of work) also pitched in relief for the Hoosiers.
With the wet weather hopefully behind them, Cal State Fullerton next hits the diamond for the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic hosted by UNLV beginning on Friday (Feb. 13) in Las Vegas. The Titans are scheduled to meet Oregon State, Oregon, Virginia, Utah, and Northwestern in tournament play.
